Think you’ve had a bad day? At every turn, marketing exec Neal Page’s (Steve Martin) plans to get home to his family for Thanksgiving get foiled, and somehow the loudmouthed, idiosyncratic fellow traveler Del Griffith (John Candy) is always right next to him driving him nuts. Will this odd couple make it to Chicago without killing each other? Ben Stein and Edie McClurg also appear in writer-director John Hughes’s comedy classic.

Bing Crosby croons to the tune of the Oscar-winning “White Christmas” in Irving Berlin’s love triangle romantic comedy. Tired of the bright lights of showbiz, Jim Hardy (Crosby) retires to the countryside to become a farmer. He converts the farm into the Holiday Inn, open only on holidays, then competes against his pal (Fred Astaire) for a singer-dancer’s (Marjorie Reynolds) affection.

James Dean (in his last film appearance) co-stars as sulking, nouveau riche Jett Rink — the root of Bick’s worries.

Scent of a Woman

Hoping to earn some extra cash during the Thanksgiving holiday, poor prep-school student Charlie Simms (Chris O’Donnell) agrees to look after blind — and cantankerous — Lt. Col. Frank Slade (Al Pacino, in a tour-de-force performance). Though the callow student and jaded colonel are mismatched, their relationship grows as Simms follows Slade around Manhattan on a string of wild escapades, and Slade is unmasked as a sentimental romantic.

Having trouble getting your internal speakers to work on your HP Mini with Ubuntu?

I found a workaround on ubuntuforums.org which has worked pretty well:

What is the work around for us HP Mini users that have LPIA processors???
The HP MINI 1000 doesn’t use a PPA processor it has a LPIA?

I tried everything to try to get sound working! Nothing works so far

After a clean install of Jaunty on my HP mini 1120 NR, there was no sound from the speaker. Sound from the headphone jack did work, however.

This is a known bug (#318942 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/318942)) and is identified in the release notes as a known issue for the HP mini.

I did manage to find a workaround to use until an official fix is released:

In Synaptic:

Add these to your repository sources:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/minichoco-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/minichoco-team/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Click “Reload” and “Mark all Upgrades”

Also make sure these two packages are installed:

alsa-source
module-assistant

Click Apply to apply changes.

As root, edit /etc/alsa/alsa-source.conf
On line 11 you should have:
ALSA_CARDS=”hda-intel”

In terminal:
sudo m-a a-i alsa-source

Reboot and then un-mute headphone & speaker in volume control.

You should now have sound from both the speaker and headphone jack.

Caveats:
- You may need to un-mute the headphone and speaker to hear sounds after each reboot. Click the volume control and un-mute.
- You may want to mute the PC beep. Click the volume control, click “Preferences” and select the checkbox for PC Beep to make that track visible. Then mute the PC Beep.
- Haven’t tested the mic, so I don’t know if that works.

Give it a try, or let me know if youv’e found a better solution.

Health Care Debate Hits Peabody MA

The Health Care debate came to small town New England. Peabody Massachusetts was ground zero for today’s controversy. A rally was scheduled requesting that Congressman Tierney hold a town meeting on HC reform, but what was expected to be a small demonstration turned into much more. Folks from both sides of the fence filled the square, including union reps who were bussed in. It was nice to see democracy in action.

A Need for Speed-- Moving to Ubuntu

As much as I have been enjoying Windows 7 RC on my HP Mini Netbook, I had a need for more speed. Win7 was a big improvement in the MS world, especially over the lethargic Vista, but I wanted more. After all, Netbooks are not built from the most cutting edge technologies, and have limited resources. I upped the horsepower a bit by upgrading to 2 GB of ram and adding another 16GB SD card (total of 32GB on-board), but still this doesn’t compare to my Macbook Pro. But, I cant let mere hardware get in my way…

I have been running Ubuntu Linux from a 2GB thumb drive for a bit while writing a few posts on Cloud Computing and Netbooks at Stree-Free Productivity:

I found after running it for a while, that I really liked the way it ran on the Netbook. The desktop effects and configuration were near equal to Windows 7, but the speed was better; even when running the “Live” image thumb drive. So, Jonesin’ for the feeling of acceleration I took the plunge and did a full install of Ubuntu 9.04.

It turned out to be a good move. What was a lethargic yet fun tool is now running on nitrous. The perceived speed increase is drastic. The OS and applications are now very responsive and agile. Its like I upgraded to a computer twice the price. With the computing worlds move towards Cloud Computing I can still perform the same tasks as I had on Windows 7.
